Description
Documenting a major West Coast collection of early American silver, this catalog from the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, illustrates and describes the works and marks of 166 silversmiths, more than half of them well-known colonial makers, including Paul Revere, Samuel Edwards, John Coney, William Cowell, Jacob Boelen, Benjamin Benton, and Philip Syng Jr. There was little scholarship available to guide Miriam Marble in her collecting; she relied instead on her discriminating eye for good design and representative examples, her love of history, and her thoughtful and persistent search for authentic pieces, from tankards and tea sets to buckles and jewelry.
