The Mexican colonial period has traditionally been considered a dark period in the arts, a long gap between the arrival of the Spaniards and the early 20th century. In truth, a rich variety of artistic development emerged during the viceregal period (1521–1821), surveyed and explored in this bilingual catalog from a joint exhibit by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museo Franz Meyer in Mexico City. Seen here in 180 color plates and 20 black and white figures are extraordinary decorative and fine art pieces, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, metals, textiles, featherwork, lacquer, and books with five essays by Mexican and American specialists.
