"Once I saw a painting / of a woman rising from some deep sea / standing on a boat-like shell / that floated toward shore," begins Tracy Gallup's paean to the wonders of the seashell, while a doll with short red hair holds a little framed reproduction of Botticelli's Birth of Venus. On the next page Gallup confesses, "I dream I am her," and we see the doll now with swirling red locks and a green bathing suit, perched in a pretty pink shell. Shell houses, shell hats, shell wings, and shell horns all adorn her little characters, leading to a story of competing with her brother, "Hawkeye," for finding the most beautiful shells on a family beach trip.
