Starting in the 1930s with works by such artists as Edward Hopper, Sara Roby continued to acquire figurative and realistic art over the next 50 years, buying work by younger and more obscure painters in a wide variety of subject matters and guided by Lloyd Goodrich, the long-time director of New York's Whitney Museum. This catalog, with 53 color and 65 black and white illustrations of paintings, sculpture, and drawings by such artists as Will Barnet, Isabel Bishop, Paul Cadmus, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Jacob Lawrence, Kenneth Hayes Miller, Ben Shahn, and George Tooker, emphasizes the development of realist and figurative painting and sculpture in a time when abstraction and expressionism came to dominate modern art.
