Starting in the 1930s with works by such artists as Edward Hopper, Sara Roby continued to acquire figurative and realistic art over the next 50 years, buying work by younger and more obscure painters in a wide variety of subject matters and guided by Lloyd Goodrich, the long-time director of New York's Whitney Museum.
