Serving as Britain's political agent to the Western Rajputana states for the East India Company in the early 19th century, Lieutenant Colonel James Tod undertook extensive research on Rajput history and polity, producing the seminal Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan. He also donated large collections of Rajasthani manuscripts and paintings, ancient coins, and topographical and architectural drawings made by his cousin Patrick Waugh and an Indian draftsman named Ghasi. This book, illustrated throughout with color reproductions and photos of these beautiful items, is an analysis of Tod's Rajasthan and its influence on other scholars and writers.
