"Poe's blackly ingenious tale of brutal murder in 19th-century Paris establishes C. Auguste Dupin, a man of 'peculiar analytic ability,' as the model for pretty much every intellectual detective to come" (Sunday Telegraph, London). This omnibus also contains the other stories featuring Dupin; "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" is a true-crime story, based on the 1841 murder of Mary Cecilia Rogers in New York City, and "The Purloined Letter" sends Dupin after a highly compromising letter pilfered from the queen's private drawing room.
