Description
Spanish soprano Pilar Lorengar (1928–1996) graced the world’s operatic stages with her bright, gleaming voice and captivating presence in a wide variety of roles, particularly the heroines of Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, and Puccini. This tribute presents her in a live 1988 recital in her native city of Zaragoza; bonus selections include performances of arias from opera films of Così fan tutte, Lohengrin, Manon Lescaut, and Don Carlo; and live performances of the "Libera me” section of the Verdi Requiem and the Zarzuela aria “Canción de la Paloma” from El barberillo de Lavapiés.

"Lorengar's radiant voice, personal beauty and aristocratic artistry inspired both admiration and affection from the public and the press…. Lorengar had a seamless instrument, capable of seemingly effortless cascades of gorgeous tone."—Opera News

"Her wide vibrato [is] a characteristic that is shared by many Spanish singers and has been described by Ms. Lorengar's admirers as an expressive shimmer…. She was an attractive and vibrant singer who created a sense of feminine vulnerability in roles like the Countess in 'Le Nozze di Figaro,' Dona Elvira in 'Don Giovanni' or Mimi in 'La Bohème,' but could also be a commanding Tosca and a lively Fiordiligi in 'Così fan Tutte.'"—NYTimes
