In 1965, Renata Tebaldi appeared on Canadian television in an evening of music by Puccini and Rossini. The highlight was a staging of the finale of Act II of Tosca. Tebaldi, at her vocal and dramatic peak, gives a searing account of the title role, tearing into the drama with an intensity exceeding many of her stage performances. A menacing Louis Quilico, in resplendent vocal form, is every bit her match. A novelty in this black and white video is Rossini’s song cycle La Regata Veneziana, a favorite of Tebaldi’s and here available with orchestral accompaniment for the first time. Tebaldi also sings “O mio babbino caro” and Quilico is heard in the chilling finale of Puccini’s Il Tabarro as well as in Tosti’s “L’ultima canzone.”
