Based on a Carson McCullers novella but adapted from a stage version written by Edward Albee, this Depression-era tragedy released in 1991 is given a full Southern Gothic treatment by director Simon Callow, replete with subconscious rage, unholy alliances, androgyny, and grotesque spectacle. At the center of the action is the imperious Miss Amelia (Vanessa Redgrave), who operates the only plantation, general store, and whiskey still in a dusty, impoverished town. The arrival of a hunchbacked dwarf (Cork Hubbert) brings unexpected joy to Amelia's life until her estranged husband (Keith Carradine) is released from prison and returns home with hatred in this heart.
