Rodney Gilfry is Pelléas, Isabel Rey is Mélisande, Michael Volle is Golaud, and László Polgár Arkel in this Zurich Opera House production of 2004. Debussy's only completed opera is based on a mysterious, dreamlike libretto by Belgian playwright and poet Maurice Maeterlinck, and this production evokes its almost subconscious, symbolist elements. The character of Mélisande is a distinct contrast to other modernist femmes fatales such as Berg's Lulu and Strauss's Salomé.
