Maestro Zubin Mehta brought out the harmonic richness, tension, and drive of Mozart's music in this 2003 production from Florence, while famed English director Sir Jonathan Miller garnered kudos for his superb staging. Russian-born soprano Eteri Gvazava is wonderful to behold and hear as Countess Almaviva, Marina Comparato is a cheeky Cherubino, and Patrizia Ciofi (an Italian bel canto star who soared as Violetta in the 2004 La Scala production of La Traviata under Muti) is Susanna, replete with all her intriguing acting skills and her pointed vocal intensity. Italian baritone Lucio Gallo is the count, and the title role is sung by bass-baritone Giorgio Surian. Every movement, every gesture, every facial expression is so thought through, creating real characters of flesh and blood.
