Description
Two settings of Shakespearean plays—one comic and one tragic—are accompanied by the true-life story of Dumas' "Lady of the Camellias," in this trio of masterworks by one of the most revered and most prolific opera composers of all time. These three Italian productions were all recorded live, from 2004-2006. With Italian soprano Patrizia Ciofi in the title role, German-Italian tenor Roberto Saccà as her lover Alfredo, and Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as his father, the performance of La Traviata was especially meaningful in that it took place at the newly restored Teatro La Fenice in Venice, which had been destroyed by fire in 1996. Its rebirth was celebrated with Verdi's masterpiece, which premiered there more than 150 years earlier.

"Mehta's jaunty conducting [of Falstaff] and the genius of Verdi carry the day. Director Luca Ronconi sets the action in present-day England, and the transposition is surprisingly effective. Falstaff and his gang live in a crumbling squat. Bardolfo is a leather-clad punk with a mohawk, Pistola an aging biker. The Merry Wives are upper-middle-class suburban matrons."—Opera News

"An asset of this version is the Lady Macbeth of Sylvie Valayre, whose voice … is dramatic, yet firm with a remarkable technique…. She is a first-rate interpreter, besides being a splendid actress."—Ritmo, Spain
