Wand's inspired readings of Brahms and Schubert are allied to his characterization of music as "balm for the soul." He asserted that "music has this effect, even though it is written without any intention of creating such an effect." These two symphonies were recorded at the Kieler Schloss, Kiel, during the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival of 1997.
