Famous for her operatic roles (Sophie in Rosenkavalier, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte), American lyric soprano Barbara Bonney delves into Robert Schumann's great song cycle Dichterliebe ("The Poet's Love") in this excellent Parisian concert, filmed in 2001. Malcolm Martineau (whom she describes as "the Rolls Royce of accompanists") is also her co-interpreter on a second grouping, consisting of Scandinavian art songs by Sibelius, Stenhammar, Alfven, and others. "Bonney was born in New Jersey, and spent time in New England as a child and student. Her big break came in Germany: during a semester abroad in Salzburg in the late '70s, she scored a repertory position with the Darmstadt City Opera and sang 40 roles with that company in the next four years.
