"Siegfried establishes the action in a grotty derelict tenement block in East Germany during the Berlin Wall era, but not all is gloom and doom, especially the final Scene between Brünnhilde and Siegfried, which includes the funniest piece of acting, topped with superb singing…. There is much talk that there are no Wagner singers these days; Stuttgart puts paid to that by finding four well balanced casts. There is the baritonal Siegmund of Robert Gambill and the robust heldentenor of Jon Fredric West, beautifully sang in all three of Siegfried's demanding Acts. Then the Sopranos…. Angela Denoke's passionate and ethereal Sieglinde, Lisa Gasteen's full of fun Brünnhilde in Siegfried and the humane and calming presence of Luana DeVol, an authoritative third Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung. The orchestra does itself proud with a truly big sound almost carved bit by bit by Lothar Zagrosek's exacting conducting. The house Chorus sounds superb and tribal to the point of spine chilling."—Musical Opinion
