Recorded live from the Salzburg Festival in 1965, this historic, black-and-white telecast of Strauss's story within a story features imaginative renditions of the host's salon, opera set, island, and Ariadne's cave, as well as picturesque costume design. But the main draw is the superlative cast of actor-singers from Munich, Stuttgart, and the Vienna State Opera. A contemporary review from the Vienna Express exclaimed that "the scenes with these two artists [Sena Jurinac as the Composer and Paul Schöffler as the Music Master] can be counted among the exemplary instances of great operatic performance." The ever-charming American soprano Reri Grist shows her coloratura chops as a fetching Zerbinetta and American heldentenor Jess Thomas makes a swoon-worthy Bacchus, while Straussian soprano Hildegard Hillebrecht (who stepped in for Christa Ludwig at the last minute) handles the roles of Primadonna / Ariadne with aplomb.
