Verdi's 10th opera, Macbeth premiered in 1847 and long remained his own favorite among his early-period works. However, almost two decades later the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris asked him to revise the score, which is the version heard here. "Altomare's Macbeth is almost a sympathetic character. Ambitious, yes, but the ambition pushed by his aggressive, controlling wife. Altomare is fine in the big arias, but he is particularly good in the conversational passages. The scenes between the Macbeths are riveting.
