Description
An attractive, youthful cast; exquisite costumes and sets; and first-rate musicianship make this alluring version of Mozart's Neapolitan comedy one to treasure.

"Italian soprano Barbara Frittoli is a formidable Fiordiligi, dispatching her challenging Act I 'Come scoglio' with show-stopping virtuosity and coping admirably with the low tessitura of her Act II 'Per pieta.' Viennese mezzo Angelika Kirchschlager is a perfect foil, singing Dorabella with equal ease and freshness. Tenor Michael Schade sings Ferrando with youthful exuberance and his customary honey tone. It is hard to imagine anyone singing 'Un aura amorosa' better, and given his sensuality of tone, it's no wonder Fiordiligi succumbs to his advances in the Act II duet…. The handsome Danish baritone, Bo Skovhus, also scores for his ardent Guglielmo. Italian baritone Alessandro Corbelli, with his sure comic timing and impeccable diction, demonstrates again why he is in such demand for Mozart and Rossini character roles, while Italian soprano Monica Bacelli is a cheeky, somewhat mature Despina, street-smart and full of spunk. Rarely have Mozart's ensembles sounded so taut or so perfectly balanced and blended."—Opera Canada
