Once called by Herbert von Karajan the "world's best violonist," Latvian virtuoso and conductor Gidon Kremer has always marched to his own drummer—kind of like Mozart. He keeps himself young musically with his spontaneity and a readiness to take risks, and has often been a crossover figure as he discovers fresh routes through well-trodden paths in music. Those predilections are evident here, as Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica perform music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart coupled with two contemporary works inspired by the great composer, all recorded live at Salzburg's Mozarteum, in 2002.
