Description
Audiophile Audition gave five stars and a "Best of the Year" commendation to this fantastic set, which shows many facets of a cosmopolitan musical polymath. Barenboim's brilliance as a pianist is seen in the 2007 Liszt program from La Scala, with selections from Years of Pilgrimage (II), the St. Francis d'Assise portrait from Legendes, and three pieces based on themes from Verdi operas. For the 2006 New Year's Eve gala, Barenboim returned to his childhood roots in Buenos Aires, with traditional tangos, symphonic works by Astor Piazzolla and Horacio Salgun, Leopoldo Federico and his Orquestra Tipica, and singer Carlos Gari. The concert from the Alhambra in Granada embodies a melting pot of cultural and religious influences, with Beethoven's "Leonore" Overture No. 3, Brahms' Symphony No. 1, and Bottesini's Fantasia on Themes of Rossini performed by Jewish and Muslim musicians. And from the Philharmonie Hall in Cologne, Baremboim conducts his own CSO in Boulez's Notations I-IV, Debussy's La Mer and the complete Three-Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla.
