Description
Even for people who do it for a living, it's hard to find words for the cumulative grandeur of these four productions. Set in a majestic old Roman quarry at St. Margarethen in eastern Austria, which forms a natural amphitheater, the stage seems to go on for miles, and the transition in the lighting from dusk to nightfall is magical. The Paris Opera, no less, is re-created in La Traviata (our favorite of the four), but there's never a dearth of spectacle. This state-sponsored summer festival pulls out all the stops, with fireworks, elephants, chariots, ballets, and of course, great singing.

"Märzendorfer binds the music together quite well, maintaining some of the qualities of Toscanini without his stunning dynamic contrasts…. If you think Kaiser and Borras are good in the first two acts [of Traviata] they'll break your heart in act III. Everything is perfect: the singing, the conducting, the mood. Again, Kaiser sings both verses of her aria ('Addio del passato'), and her performance here is on a par with the best: Muzio, Callas, Moffo.… 'Parigi, o cara' is sung with an elegance I've not heard since McCormack-Bori and a rhythmic acuity I've not heard since Toscanini. Kaiser's death scene is both touching and realistic."—Fanfare
