This evening of authentic Viennese dance and music charts the rise of the waltz craze (1800–1850), recreating the beauty and atmosphere of performances in 19th-century Vienna. In the wonderful setting of the Hofburg, the period-instrument orchestra Wiener Akademie plays Strauss family favorites while dancers in historical costumes whirl and twirl around the ballroom to the strains of the "Blue Danube Waltz," "Tritsch Tratsch Polka," "Emperor Waltz," the "Radetzky March," and more. The docudrama The Waltz King, narrated by Lesley Garrett, explores the origins of the waltz and the drama of its two great composers: a father and a son in bitter conflict. "Garrett is a singing whirlwind. She sweeps fans in her wake and gives them the exciting ride they want."—BBC Music "Garrett is of course, a natural communicator and just about the best ambassador for singers."—The Times
