Description
Director Christoph Nel directed this starkly modern version of Die Walküre, the second opera in Wagner's Ring cycle. It was part of a 1999/2000 Staatsoper Stuttgart production of all four operas, each with a different director, cast, set designer, and costumer but with conductor Lothar Zagrosek as the binding element.

"At a time when most are struggling to find something new to say about Wagner, Zehelein shattered convention by allocating the four operas to four different production teams. The results are astonishing as much for the unexpected harmony of the different approaches as for the strength of their diverse insights. Thus deconstructed, Wagner is less totalitarian, more dramatic. The Ring finally looks politically and psychologically modern again."—Financial Times

"A darkly lit, basic wood-panelled box is the general setting, and Hunding's Hut simply has a table, some chairs and a grotty shower in the corner. Presumably his angle on the piece … is to concentrate on relationships, motivation etc. and forget all the Nordic fairy tale claptrap…. When Siegmund (a light-voiced but intelligent Robert Gambill) comes staggering in from the 'storm' in jogging pants and hooded top, as if he's been in training for the London Marathon … there is certainly a tangible chemistry between his angst-laden character and the skimpily dressed Angela Denoke, who is also in good voice, as she was in Rattle's recent Fidelio…. The climactic battle with Hunding is played out by giant puppets at the back of the stage."—MusicWeb International
