Description
This historic recording took place in the St. Florian Church in Linz, Austria, at the 1996 International Bruckner Festival. Bruckner is buried at the Stiftskirche St. Florian, where he was the organist and where the themes of this symphony were first heard in an organ improvisation he played in 1886. The clarity of Bruckner's musical structure and its richly expressive orchestration are well served by the prestigious Vienna Philharmonic, with their silken, rich strings, full-throated brass, and intricately delineated winds.

"This is an exceptional Bruckner Eighth, make no mistake…. Boulez does all of the things that a great Bruckner performance requires…. One of the best things Boulez has ever done for any composer. And that's saying a lot."—Classics Today

"Bruckner's huge symphonic structures are seen as ‘cathedrals in sound', so to witness a performance in Bruckner's own burial place, and a spectacular one at that, is very moving. The magnificent St. Florian church is so much better a venue for this music than a modern, sterile hall…. [Director] Large's experienced and sensitive camera knows instinctively when to leave the musicians and slowly pan around the various murals and frescoes which adorn its ceilings and walls. There is also the thrill of watching an orchestra like the Vienna Philharmonic playing at close quarters, something not many of us have the chance to do. Then there is Boulez himself, all eagle eyes and economic, batonless gestures."—MusicWeb International
