On March 27, 1808, Haydn attended a performance of his hugely popular, late masterpiece Die Schöpfung, under the direction of Antonio Salieri. At almost 76, Haydn was carried to the hall in a sedan chair before an audience that included Ludwig van Beethoven. It was to be his last appearance at a public concert. This gala live performance of the oratorio uses a reduced chorus and an orchestra similar to that of Haydn's day, achieving a mellow string sound and a sympathetic blend of the wind instruments' colors and registers. "The Collegium Aureum was a German early instrument group with a relatively modern (and pleasant) sound. The strings have at least a hint of vibrato, and the brass and wind seem to be close to modern instruments…. Offers fine vocal work, especially when Auger is singing."—American Record Guide
