While he was alive, Kurt Schwitters provoked the art world with his one-man Dada movement, called Merz, which united painting, sculpture, architecture, and literature, and gave birth to a new kind of collage that combined commonplace objects like rusty nails, bits of wire, and scraps of newspaper into works of art. After his death, the settlement of his estate—worth millions—generated several sensational lawsuits involving his heirs, a mistress, the Norwegian government, and the Marlborough Gallery. This documentary looks back at Schwitters’ life and work and unravels the bizarre scandal that followed his death.
