|
The dwarfish son of a French aristocrat, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec lead a short, excessive life chronicling the colorful, bohemian milieu of Montmartre's nightclub district during Paris's celebrated belle époque era at the beginning of the 20th century. Most famously, on placards and lithographs, he depicted the debauched world of Parisian cabarets and brothels, stripped of their glamour, in a style that has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate. This documentary uses scenes from John Huston's 1952 film Moulin Rouge, archival footage of original locations, a Lautrec exhibit at London's Royal Academy, and interviews with artists, critics, and collectors to provide insights into the artist's life.
