Description
This wonderful performance of Schubert's great song cycle by Christa Ludwig (was there anything she couldn't do?) was recorded for television in 1994. A bonus feature shows the legendary singer conducting a Mozart master class and in historical footage as Dorabella in Coś fan tutte.

"An astonishing realization of the human condition. Traditionally sung by a male voice, it is no less poignant from a female voice, particularly from an artiste of Ludwig's calibre. She had the songs transposed to her natural vocal range so that 'it was my voice and not an artificial voice created just so you can sing something in the original version…. I maintain that this is the winter's journey of a soul and not that of a man or a woman.' An exceptional, devoted performance reflecting a total empathy with the thoughts and implications of the texts."—The Whole Note

"It nearly goes without saying, when considering an artist of Ludwig's stature, that her dramatic and musical interpretation of Schubert's music is first rate, her phrasing and expression is natural and expressive, and that, when (minimal) physical gestures are used, they are appropriate to the text or dramatic situation."—Notes
