The 1894 Biblical Songs were a high point in Dvorák's compositions for voice. He later orchestrated five of the ten: "Clouds and darkness are around him," "Thou art my defence and shield," "Hear my prayer, O God," "The Lord is my shepherd," and "I will sing a new song unto thee, O God." His Te Deum is a joyful one that begins with a hymn of praise to the Holy Trinity. Later, fortissimo passages by choir and orchestra are followed by a serene soprano solo. "The first concert is under the direction of Jirí Belohlávek some years before he took over as the BBC Symphony Orchestra's principal conductor. His conducting is a model of calm control….
