Description
The work that brought Dvorák international fame was also one that arose from his deepest sorrow: the death of three of his children. With four outstanding soloists and conducted by Václav Neumann (principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, 1968–1990), this performance was filmed live at the Vladislav Hall of Prague Castle in 1989. "Many composers—including Pergolesi, Rossini, Poulenc, and Penderecki—have set this text, which dates from the 1400s. Dvorák's setting is one of the most ambitious, however. It is about 90 minutes long, and requires four vocal soloists of operatic quality, full chorus, and orchestra. Dvorák's response to the text is impassioned; listeners are transported to the foot of the cross, as it were, to feel the pain of losing a child, except the pain is given almost cosmic proportions."—Classical Net

"The chorus under Lubomír Mátl is astonishingly well disciplined, and capable of great power when necessary. Balancing is uniformly excellent, too…. It is Neumann's evident passion for every note of the score that shines through most. This is a very special DVD that deserves every success."—MusicWeb International
