This is a knock-your-socks-off kind of program with two kinds of exultation—nationalistic and religious. Recorded live at the Alte Oper Frankfurt in 1990 with Václav Neumann and the all-virtuoso Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra is Dvorák's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95 ("From the New World"), while Leoš Janácek's glorious Mša glagolskaja (Glagolitic Mass) is heard in Prague's Rudolfinum ("Dvorák Hall") in 1987. Neumann (1920–1995) was a past master at conducting Czech music, having been at the helm of his beloved Philharmonic for many decades. "Neumann's direction [of the Mass]… is patient, solid and sensitive to detail, especially in the Sanctus …. The Dvorák is a very much a no-holds-barred sort of performance: strongly accented, with impressive keenness of attack in all departments (the timpanist has a whale of a time) and a plethora of intense facial expressions that suggests just how involved the players are. In other words, it's the sort of experience we've come to expect from the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, total commitment multiplied many times over.
