Carreras's repertoire in this 1989 appearance—on the same opera stage where he made his brilliant debut as a 30-year-old—includes compositions by Scarlatti, Bononcini, Stradella, Massenet, Tosti, Falla, Obradors, Guastavino, Halffter, Ginastera, Nacho, Cardillo, Leoncavallo, Lara, and Falvo. The Spanish tenor performs no fewer than 23 songs, as well as five encores. The first half of the evening encompasses works from the Italian Baroque, French mélodies by Jules Massenet, and canzoni by Francesco Paolo Tosti, whereas the second half consists of Spanish works, focusing principally on the haunting songs of Manuel de Falla.
