Helmuth Rilling conducts Mozart's 1789 arrangement of Handel's "Grand Musical Entertainment." According to Rilling, the details make this arrangement so fascinating: dynamic changes, a different segmentation of solo and chorus parts, the instruments modulated to the tone characteristic of Mozart's time. "Actually," says Rilling, "this Messiah is a new work, more colourful, and very interesting!" "It is curious that the first DVD of Messiah should be Mozart's German version, and the additional scoring for woodwind, horns and brass certainly gives the orchestra an 18th-century sound, while the three trombones add to the weight of the choruses….
