|
Once described as "an irresistible eighteenth century vaudeville," Mozart's three-act opera The Abduction from the Seraglio was commissioned for Vienna's National-Singspiel, the newly established German opera company. The story revolves around the rescue by Belmonte of his fiancée Konstanze, who was captured by pirates and sold to the harem of the Turkish pasha. This Glyndebourne Festival performance from 1980 was comically yet sensitively staged by Peter Wood, while maestro Kuhn led his excellent soloists to an ensemble performance of great unity. The singspiel, a hybrid of music and dialogue, is realized here in an exceptionally convincing fashion.
