Verdi's last opera, written six years after Otello, is seen in a production from 2001, the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. Staged by Herbert Wernicke at the Festival de Musique d'Aix-en-Provence, it is set in 1893, the year of its premiere. "Willard White's Falstaff is peerlessly vain, and he sings very well…. The cast are all in fine voice, the particular standouts being Marcus Jupither's sumptuous Ford … and the silvery Nannetta of Miah Persson. Persson's duet with Yann Beuron's Fenton—the one we only get in hints scattered like moonlight here and there through the score—is, as it should be in any Falstaff, a thrill and an enticement whenever it returns. Enrique Mazzola conducts vigorously, with aromatic details and vivid rhythms….
