Description
Rossini's early fame was based both on Tancredi—his first great "opera seria"—and on the bubbly L'Italiana in Algeri, which debuted three months later. Following the first performance of Tancredi in February 1813 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, it became one of his most popular works. Then it languished until Tullio Serafin staged it with Giulietta Simionato at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, in 1952. And when the great Marilyn Horne assumed the title role (a "breeches" part), the "Rossini Renaissance" really got rolling. Pier Luigi Pizzi's compelling, stylish staging brought together some of today's foremost bel canto performers, and presented both of Rossini's endings: happy and un.

"The performance operates on a high level musically."—Fanfare

"Pizzi has never before achieved such deep, spontaneous emotional effect. The supreme elegance of his neo-classical sets, dense with pictorial allusion, was constantly brought to life by the vibrant singing and committed acting of young singers who showed a perfect assimilation of Rossini style yet never flaunted their vocal accomplishment for its own sake…. Gelmetti conducted with infinite sensitivity."—Opera News

"Bayo projects Amenaide's innocence with mile after mile of bright and finely pointed tone…. In the title role, Manca di Nissa's approach to Rossini's text, like Bayo's, is punctilious, and the voice itself is impressive. Gimenez excels in the bel canto repertoire, and as Argirio, his heroically pinging tone makes him an able statesman and a surprisingly effective father. D'Arcangelo sounds good and looks great in the thankless role of Orbezzano. Isauro, an archetypal 'soprano's best friend' role, nevertheless gets her moment in the sun, and Bak makes the most of it."—Classical Net
