Rossini's early fame was based both on Tancredi—his first great "opera seria"—and on the bubbly L'Italiana in Algeri, which debuted three months later. Following the first performance of Tancredi in February 1813 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, it became one of his most popular works. Then it languished until Tullio Serafin staged it with Giulietta Simionato at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, in 1952. And when the great Marilyn Horne assumed the title role (a "breeches" part), the "Rossini Renaissance" really got rolling. Pier Luigi Pizzi's compelling, stylish staging brought together some of today's foremost bel canto performers, and presented both of Rossini's endings: happy and un.
