Description
A more deliberate, confident performance than his earlier recording Poetry for the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac's Blues and Haikus sets the poet's readings to accompaniment from his favorite saxophone "tenorman" Zoot Sims and Sims' friend and collaborator Al Cohn, who also sits in on piano. Kerouac himself turns in a musical performance when he takes to singing some of his words. The 1959 recording features a ten-minute reading of some 35 haikus; the shorter pieces "Hard Hearted Old Farmer" and "The Last Hotel & Some of Dharma"; and a 14-minute string of poems from the unpublished Book of Blues. First reissued on audio CD as part of Rhino Record's Jack Kerouac Collection in 1990, with a bonus of almost 17 minutes of previously unreleased material from the sessions, Blues and Haikus is finally available here as a single disc.
