This exhibit catalog from the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery offers a stunning color presentation of more than 50 quilts from the 19th century, made or carefully transported by women and their families during the great migration west. All of the quilts are shown in full and many include closeups, some filling two pages. The book highlights the importance of quilts and quilt making in the lives of frontier women; pioneers heading for a new life in the Nebraska Territory packed their wagons with necessities, almost always including quilts, which served an important purpose along the difficult journey and also were a reminder of all that had been left behind.
