When the editors of online storytelling magazine SMITH asked readers to submit six-word memoirs, à la Ernest Hemingway's famously short story "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn," they proved that personal life stories can be told this way too, as evidenced in their earlier collection Not Quite What I Was Planning. They also found that the predominant theme, by far, was love. Here SMITH presents "life in all its shades of red—a valentine, if you will, to every kind of love," in exactly six words, from "It's just a matter of luck" (Ayelet Waldmann) to "Our song: Pat Benetar's 'We Belong'" (Daniel Handler), from "Seventeen, already love being the mistress" (Molly Savage) to "Teen homewrecker. Still miss his kid" (Martha Garvey), and from "People can't want what they want" (Dr. Drew) to "He still needs me at sixty-four" (Armistead Maupin).
