Description
The legendary trilogy Glenn Gould Plays Bach was made by French filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon in 1981 as the pianist made his second studio recording of the Goldberg Variations. This fascinating musical profile of a uniquely creative and original performer (described by the Austrian playwright Thomas Bernhard as "the greatest pianist of all time") also includes performances of Book II of the Well-Tempered Clavier, excerpts from The Art of Fugue and Three-Part Sinfonias, and more. This is the first time the complete series has been available as a 3-DVD boxed set.

"This truly astonishing performance [Goldberg Variations] was recorded in 1981, 26 years after Gould's legendary 1955 disc. By his own admission he had, during those intervening years, discovered 'slowness' or a meditative quality far removed from flashing fingers and pianistic glory. And it is this 'autumnal repose' that adds such a deeply imaginative dimension to Gould's unimpeded clarity and pin-point definition. How remarkable that what are arguably Gould's two greatest records should be his first and his last."Gramophone
