In the best sound ever, here are the recordings—many of them out of print—that laid the foundation for America's uniquely original art form. Satchmo's vocalizing and solo improvising gave birth to swing on the seminal Hot Five recordings of "Heebie Jeebies," "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Muskrat Ramble," and his Hot Seven takes of "Potato Head Blues," "Twelfth Street R ag," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," and "Savoy Blues." One CD spotlights him with pianist Earl Hines ("Chicago BreakDown"), Carroll Dickerson's Stompers (the lost Argentine sides "Symphonic Raps" and "Savoyagers Stomp"), the Hot Five ("West End Blues," "Basin Street Blues"), and the Savoy Ballroom Five with Don Redman ("Beau Koo Jack," "Weather Bird," "Muggles," "Tight Like This"). In 1929, Armstrong and his orchestra began recording in New York (CD 5 and 6's "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Black and Blue," "When You're Smiling," "I Ain't Got Nobody," "St. Louis Blues," "Rockin' Chair," "Tiger Rag," "Body and Soul"), and they kept turning out the hits back in Chicago in 1931 and '32 (CD 7 and 8: "Walkin' My Baby Back Home," "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," "Them There Eyes," "Stardust," "Georgia on My Mind," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," "Kickin' the Gong Around"). Armstrong's move to Victor in late 1932 is reflected in CD 9 and 10's 36 tracks, including "That's My Home," "I've Got the World on a String," "High Society," and "Swing, You Cats"—and ending with Louis (and wife Lil on piano) backing Jimmie Rodgers on "Blue Yodel #9." "Before Armstrong, jazz was perceived as a clamorous urban folk music…. It was a social music that favored collective embellishment over solitary virtuosity….
