This firsthand account by a retired British official provides unique insight into Indian conditions and attitudes in the north of the subcontinent on the eve of the British departure. Malcolm Lyall Darling (1880–1969) talked with hundreds of peasants and wayside travelers and officials during the course of a 1400-mile horseback journey from Peshawar to the Central Provinces, from November 1946 through April 1947. The final part of the book, which was written after independence and the creation of Pakistan, pulls together the insights these interviews raised with respect to politics, economic conditions, and changing social attitudes and family life.
