In 1936, while visiting Denmark, James Joyce wrote a letter to his young grandson Stephen James Joyce, playfully ruing that he could not send him a cat as he had done from northern France (a toy cat stuffed with sweets). The reason was simple: there were no cats in Copenhagen, as Joyce explained in a delightfully offbeat modernist fable he wrote within the letter. Decades later, this spontaneous little gem was rediscovered in a trunk of papers. It is presented here in a small picture book format illustrated with absurdist cartoons by Casey Sorrow, in which the cats are everywhere—they just insist that they aren't cats. Though written for a young child, the book's subtle subversiveness may appeal more to adult readers.
