Tacky is definitely the odd bird out among his penguin friends, in this first book in the Tacky series by Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger, for readers 4 to 8. For one thing, he wears a loud flowered shirt and a purple bowtie, and instead of a polite greeting, Tacky prefers to slap people on the back and shout, "What's happening?" He doesn't dive into the water gracefully (he likes a splashy cannonball) and his marching is irregular, to put it kindly. Worst of all, he only sings silly songs like "How Many Toes Does a Fish Have?" But when some rough tough hunters come to Nice Icy Land to rustle some "pretty penguins," Tacky's bizarre behavior convinces them that no pretty penguins live there.
