Giving grist to the rumor that he must have blackmailed his way into the series, McSweeney's editor Dave Eggers apparently has a lock on the pilot's chair for what has become one of the most popular Best American titles, Nonrequired Reading. For the 2009 collection he (and his writing students at 826 Valencia and 826 Michigan) dredged up tasty bits from Jonathan Franzen, Nathan Englander, Denis Johnson, and Émile Bravo, as well as the Best American Censorship Blunder, Best American New Brand Names, and Best American Kids' Letters to Obama. Since its inception in 1915, the Best American series has become the premier annual showcase for the country's finest short fiction and nonfiction. Though Nonrequired Reading is unique in having its own editorial process, for the other titles a series editor reviews hundreds of periodicals, then selects between 50 and 100 outstanding works. The guest editor—a recognized expert in the field—then pares the list down to the 20 or so very best pieces.
