Description

|
|
George Segal delivered a breakout performance in this 1965 POW flick, based on James Clavell's bleak World War II novel. Segal stars as the title character (so-named for breeding the rodents that supply much-needed protein to the emaciated prisoners' diets), an amoral, streetwise GI held in a Japanese prison camp who runs a variety of money-making operations, in spite of the Provost Martial's (Tom Courtenay) efforts to catch him breaking regulations. Under the harrowing camp conditions, he rises to a position of power over his military and social superiors, manipulating those around him and controlling the prison's black market. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
