|
In Depression-hit Britain of the 1930s, Sarah Burton (Anna Maxwell Martin, in a BAFTA-nominated performance) returns from London to her working-class Yorkshire hometown as headmistress of a failing girls' school. Full of idealism and "modern" opinions, Sarah strives to give all of the town's young women a chance at education and realizing their dreams, but finds her efforts thwarted by a strict class system and strong gender prejudices. Alan Almond's BAFTA-award winning cinematography vividly depicts a poverty-ridden Yorkshire still reeling from the effects of the Great War, in this BBC adaptation of Winifred Holtby's acclaimed final novel.
