A psychological portrait of loss and alienation, this 2010 fictionalized biography of the late Beatle and cultural icon begins with the death of father figure and manager Brian Epstein (Rory Kinnear) in 1964, then follows Lennon as he tries to reconnect with his estranged father (Christopher Fairbank), becomes entangled with Yoko Ono (Naoko Mori), dissolves his marriage with the supportive but dull Cynthia (Claudie Blakley), disbands the Beatles, takes up political activism, and eventually leaves Britain altogether. Director Edmund Coulthard effectively blends vintage footage of the Beatles and of Lennon with the fictional biopic, and in the title role, Christopher Eccleston delivers an unvarnished portrayal of a frequently self-indulgent artist forever battling a hostile world and his own psychological issues.
