During World War II, when all transatlantic telephone cables were cut to prevent Germany intercepting information, one top-secret cable was put in operation: a technologically advanced system creating a direct link between Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ruth Ive, then a young stenographer in Britain's Ministry of Information, had the job of censoring the line: listening in to top-level conversations while poised to cut the link if anything was said that might compromise security. After the war, all official papers pertaining to the line were destroyed. Ive's story—which she could not tell until Churchill's private files were declassified in 1995—documents these remarkable conversations as well as Britain's wartime communications systems.
