On June 24, 1948, the Soviet Union abruptly closed all access to the Western Sectors of Berlin. Over two million civilians, dependent on the surrounding territory and the West for food, fuel, and other basic goods, were suddenly cut off from all necessities of life. The Western Allies could withdraw their garrisons and give the Soviets control of the entire city, or try to supply Berlin by air, an unprecedented feat of supply and logistics. None of the senior military commanders believed it could be done, but London and Washington insisted that it must. Historian and Foreign Service Officer Helena Schrader tells the remarkable saga of an impossible assignment that began in ignorance, was conducted without resources, yet became a success that not even its advocates had imagined.
